PRP (Add on)

PRP or a platelet-rich plasma can be added on to any microneedling service or injected as a stand-alone treatment. It is notable and has attracted a lot of interest because the procedure utilizes your own blood platelets which help with collagen production which may help with fine lines, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, hair loss and sagging skin. The micro-needling technique is already associated with stimulating the growth and reproduction of collagen by causing skin cell trauma. When it is combined with PRP, you are essentially getting a double whammy of a collagen boost. Once your skin has been penetrated, its existing collagen will begin healing it over. While this is happening, new, healthier, and tougher collagen is being grown by your body. Although it takes a few weeks for this new collagen to grow, you will notice almost instant skin tightening.

How does microneedling work?

In a microneedling treatment, your provider will make tiny, naked-to-the-visible-eye holes on your skin to stimulate the wound-healing cascade. This releases many growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factors, connective tissue growth factor, and fibroblast growth factors, among others. All of this works together to stimulate fibroblasts to make new blood vessels and collagen. Microneedling breaks through the barrier of our skin stimulating rapid-fire recovery, which can amp up our collagen production and break down scarring and wrinkles along the way.

Sometimes, microneedling treatment plans include platelet-rich plasma (PRP) too. This involves drawing the patient’s blood, separating out the platelet rich plasma using specialized tubes and a centrifuge, and then spreading it on the skin as we microneedle. It helps the device glide and provides immediate access to the patient’s own growth factors. It helps to speed up healing and often boosts the response.

What happens during Microneedling?

After your skin is cleansed, a numbing cream such as lidocaine is applied. Next, your Aesthetician or health care provider uses a hand-held electric tool with tiny needles that pulse up and down to puncture the skin. The length of the needles can be adjusted. Longer needles go deeper into the skin, which might be necessary for deep scars or pockmarks from acne.

You may feel warmth or a scratching sensation on your face once the microneedling starts. Deep microneedling might cause a little bleeding. Each session may last about 30 minutes depending on the area treated. In just an hour you can be back to work or play without down time or pain.

What can I expect after Microneedling?

You can experience minor redness and irritation for a few days following the procedure. Some people also have dry, flaking skin that improves with moisturizer. A typical patient recommendation is a series of 3 or 4 treatments spaced one month apart, however that can vary based on individual needs. A once-a-year treatment may be recommended for maintenance. Results will appear over the next several months.

What safety tips should I know before Microneedling?

The FDA regulates microneedling products that are medical devices to make sure they are safe, and work as claimed. Not all microneedling products are medical devices. The FDA has not authorized any microneedling medical devices for over-the-counter sale. The FDA recommends that this service be performed by a medical doctor or an aesthetician under a doctor’s supervision. Microneedling is not suitable for everyone, so it’s important to talk to a health care provider if you have:

Active acne or use certain acne medications.

Cancer and are receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Moderate to severe psoriasis or eczema

Frequent rashes (contact dermatitis) or cold sores.

The minimally invasive treatment can be used all over the body—from scalp to ankles—to improve the appearance of scars, boost collagen, or encourage hair growth. Microneedling is also a standard treatment for fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, and stretch marks.
